Maple, Acer pseudoplatanus, comes with several different types of grain figures. Bird's eye maple is one of the more unusual figurings. Several years ago I was lucky enough to make a trade where I received some fine boards of bird's eye maple in exchange for guitar and Chapman Stick lessons. So these boards have been seasoning in my shop for at least 5 years. This particular board shows both bird's eyes and quiting.

This board had a paper sticker on it letting us know what kind of wood it was. It's annoying, but the stiker mark can be taken out with a sharp hand plane. Most of this board has some mineral spirits wiped on it to simulate how it would look with a finish.
