Bocote

  Bocote

Bocote is another highly figured wood. It's a reddish brown with deep black stripes. The board in this particular picture has been wiped with mineral spirits to better show the grain. The white flecks are reflections in the mineral spirits.

Here's another board which shows the kinds of contrast typical of bocote. It's a very hard wood and I typically use it for fingerboards. I rarely see it in widths wide enough to make an instrument back. But it is excellent for fingerboards and bindings.

Here's a fingerboard of bocote on top of a laminate of maple and paduak. It makes a nice contrast to the spruce top.
